We are not alone in our appreciation of this grape variety; it is also popular among wine lovers and winemakers around the world. In fact, it is the most widely cultivated grape variety in France and ranks first among international red grape varieties in Italy. Globally, it is surpassed only by Cabernet Sauvignon.<\/strong><\/p>\n

An interesting fact about this variety is that, much like Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc plays a key role among its ancestors. DNA research has shown that Merlot is the result of a natural cross between Cabernet Franc, the primary variety in Vill\u00e1ny, and the lesser-known Magdeleine Noire des Charentes. The grape’s name comes from an old French dialect meaning ‘little black thrush’, likely referring to the deep colour of wine made from this variety.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the Gere Estate, the first Merlot bunches to arrive at the winery find a home in our Ros\u00e9 Frici and Ros\u00e9 wines. The fruitiness and charm characteristic of the variety are already valued at this level. Of course, we don\u2019t compromise on this in our red wines either, where these qualities are complemented by velvety smoothness and a delicate texture – which is why we consider it one of the most approachable grape varieties.<\/span><\/p>\n

We can clearly appreciate these qualities in the Merlot from our classic wine family as well. Thanks to its soft acidity, gentle tannins, balanced, medium body, and the corresponding ageing in 500-liter barrels, this wine – first produced in 2010 – has since become an indispensable part of our portfolio, vintage after vintage.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to this, we also use it in blends. Merlot accounts for approximately 40% of our winery\u2019s flagship wine, Kopar, vintage after vintage. The most exciting part, however, is always making our top-of-the-line Merlot, the Solus. An interesting aspect of this grape variety is that, although it is widely cultivated and can be used in many different ways, producing an exceptional Merlot requires a high degree of precision and exceptional natural conditions \u2014 conditions that we are fortunate to have in the Kop\u00e1r vineyard.<\/span><\/p>\n

We couldn\u2019t imagine our estate’s vineyards or our winery’s selection of wines without Merlot.
