For enthusiasts of serious Hungarian red wines pre-ordering the new vintage of the iconic Kopar has become a well-established institution since it was first started nearly three decades ago. This year, the upcoming 2022 vintage can be pre-ordered between 1 and 31 October.
‘I believe that one of Kopar’s key strengths is that, like the world’s most renowned wines, while the influence of the vintage is discernible and the quantity produced may differ, the fundamental concept remains the same. We believe that consistency is essential in building a leading wine brand,” says Andrea Gere, summarising her thoughts on the 2022 vintage, which will be released in just under six months.
Since its inception, Kopar has not been produced every year; we only release it when the vintage is worthy of representing the Villány wine region and our winery as its flagship wine. The grapes undergo three rounds of selection before they are pressed. To produce our finest wines, we keep the yield low from the outset, leaving only 5–6 bunches on each vine and selecting only the most beautiful ones. This is followed by manual selection at harvest time and optical selection on the sorting table, where berries of less than optimal quality are discarded.
After fermentation, the base wines are aged separately in wooden barrels according to grape variety and vineyard. Approximately 16 months later, the two-month selection process begins. During this time, we taste the wines several times to select the raw materials for our premium wines. This work requires considerable time and concentration, as we pay close attention to every nuance of the wines. In addition to the grape variety, the location of the vineyard within a given plot and the toasting of the barrel also influence the wine’s character. After bottling, we do not release the wines immediately. They spend some additional time in our cellar under ideal conditions, so that when they first reach the consumer, they provide the full experience, of course, with many years ahead of them.
The 2022 vintage will be released in May 2026 and will be available to pre-order in unopened cases of 12 bottles through our webshop between 1 and 31 October. Customers ordering 24 bottles will receive a free bottle of Kopar Magnum.
