Csillagvölgy vineyard is one of the old slopes of Villány. It lies between the town and Szársomlyó-hill. We own a cca. 20 hectare size, southern sited, declivous area where we harvest the grape used for Weninger & Gere Villányi Franc – among others.
We had our first, small vineyard in this slope, then in 2005 we bought a bigger, 10 hectare size Cabernet Sauvignon plantation, which gives the basis of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Sauvignon Barrique wines. Beside of this merlot, portugieser, pinot noir and fekete járdovány can be found here. Here we had the oldest vineyard of our winery: a Cabernet Franc planted in the 1960’s, what we replanted in 2010-11.
In the slope humus carbonate soil lies on limestone basis (loess, weathered marly limestone, dolomite). Its aeration is good, but the water management is medium because of the thick layer with good characteristics. Its nutrition management is also medium. But with all these it is an excellent soil for vines.
The 170-180 m high Csillagvölgy slope with southern and south-western inclination has a unique micro climate, because on its both sides the plantations turn toward southwest and southeast creating 1-1 smaller ditches. The ditch diverts the cold air from the higher vineyards, making the plantations here frost proof.
